Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of a surgical clip as a tissue marker in patients undergoing preoperative neoadjuvant chemotherapy for breast carcinoma.
Materials and Methods: Between March 2008 and September 2009, surgical clip was placed as a tissue marker, using sonographic guidance, in 12 breast cancer patients undergoing preoperative chemotherapy. Post tissue marker insertion mammography was done for confirmation of proper placement of the surgical clip. A prospective review of these cases was made to evaluate the usefulness of the tissue marker on follow-up images including chemotherapy responsiveness, position change or other complications.
Results: Surgical clip as a tissue marker was successfully placed in all 12 patients. One patient underwent surgery without neoadjuvant chemotherapy and 1 patient was lost during follow-up; finally 10 patients underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy. All masses were decreased in size after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. No complication due to the marker, including migration, pain, or infection was detected. Preoperative wire localization was possible without any difficulty in all patients.
Conclusion: Placing a surgical clip as a tissue marker in patients undergoing preoperative neoadjuvant chemotherapy for breast carcinoma is useful for localization of the tumor bed before the lesion becomes unidentifiable.
